To celebrate the occasion of their 75th Anniversary, the Cave Rescue Organisation (CRO) held a street party at their depot in Clapham on Saturday 5th June.

The sunshine brought the crowds as team members, their families, local residents and visitors joined in the fun. Members of other cave and mountain rescue teams also attended including Dr Peter Temesvari from the Hungarian Cave Rescue Team. He said “It’s my first time here and I’m very impressed at the level of community support for the team. It’s a great event”.

CRO were also honoured to welcome Peter Bell, the President of Mountain Rescue England and Wales, who commented “I think that today’s event has been a tremendous success and it’s extremely encouraging to see the support from Dr Farrer and the local community. It’s certainly brought the work of CRO to the surface and it’s been a unique chance for people to see what the organisation is about”.

The children enjoyed the climbing tower, mini cave and bouncy castles and they were given specially printed balloons with the CRO logo. Delicious tea and cakes were available and the all day BBQ was also a great success. There were tours of the depot and equipment demonstrations and a chance to meet Tara, one of the team’s search and rescue dogs.

The key focus of the day was to formally open the new extension to the depot, which was added last year to update the training, control and storage facilities. The speech of Jack Pickup, Chairman of CRO, acknowledged the contribution from Jack Myers and the funding from the West Riding Masonic Charities that had made the extension depot extension possible and then accepted a cheque for £1,130 from Kathryn Richardson from the HSBC bank in Settle who had raised money for CRO completing a sponsored walk across Morecambe Bay.

Jack also paid tribute to team members past and present and announced that their work had been honoured as the team have just been awarded the Queens Award for Voluntary Service, which is the equivalent of an MBE. Then Dr John Farrer, the President of CRO, kindly cut the police tape to officially open the depot.
