After seven weeks without an incident, members of the Cave Rescue Organisation were called out three times, last week.
On Tuesday (30th) a sheep was reported to be stranded on a ledge, high up at Gordale Scar (Malham). As a team member abseiled towards it, it chose to jump, landing, unharmed, three metres below, at the top of a high, steep, scree slope.
On New Year’s Day, North Yorkshire Police called the team to go to a 59-year old man from Barnsley, who had collapsed with a medical condition, on the ascent of Pen y ghent from Brackenbottom (Horton in Ribblesdale). After attention from Yorkshire Ambulance Service paramedics, from Settle, he was carried by CRO Land Rover to a road ambulance, for transport to Airedale General Hospital. He was discharged from hospital, later in the day
As team members were arriving at this incident, a second call was received, this time from Yorkshire Ambulance Service, to go to a 50-year old woman from Wakefield, who had slipped on ice, possibly breaking her ankle, on the Ingleton Waterfalls Walk. After attention from YAS paramedics, she was carried by stretcher to a road ambulance at Beezley’s Farm, for transport to Royal Lancaster Infirmary.
